Here's what most activity boxes get wrong, they hand a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old the exact same instructions. But the box isn't the magic. You are. 18–24 months

Naming the world
Your words

Talk in labels, not questions. "Cow. The cow says moooo. Big cow!" Name what they touch, narrate what they do. They're collecting words right now, so repeat and stretch single ones rather than expecting answers.

Their hands

Big, whole-hand movements: grabbing, dropping, posting, stacking two or three pieces. There is no wrong way yet. Let them explore the materials however they like — that is the activity.

"Finished" looks like

5 to 10 minutes is a full, successful session. If they wander off, you're done — that's a complete attention span at this age, not a flop.

2–2.5 years

Doing it "myself"
Your words

Start with tiny questions. "What's this?" "Where's the sheep?" Ask, then wait — count to five in your head. If nothing comes, answer it warmly yourself. No quizzing, no pressure.

Their hands

Sorting, matching, posting into slots, first scribbles. This is the "me do it" age, so let them lead and you follow their hands rather than steering.

"Finished" looks like

10 to 15 minutes. And if they want the same activity five days in a row — that's the win, not boredom. Repetition is exactly how it sinks in.

2.5–3 years

Little stories begin
Your words

Graduate from "what is it?" to "what's happening here?" and "how do you think they feel?" Open-ended, no right answer. When they reply, gently say it back as a fuller sentence — that's how sentences grow.

Their hands

Threading, chunky puzzles, holding a crayon, simple pretend scenes. They'll start adding their own story to the play — follow wherever it goes.

"Finished" looks like

15 to 20 minutes. You'll notice them narrating to themselves — that's a sign to step back a little and let them run with it.

3–3.5 years

The "why" years
Your words

Open the thinking dials: "Why do you think that happened?" "What would happen if…?" Let the silences sit — those pauses are them actually reasoning. Resist filling the gap too fast.

Their hands

Cutting with a little help, drawing shapes you can recognise, building structures, more precise placing. Pretend play gets detailed and bossy (in the best way).

"Finished" looks like

20 to 30 minutes, and they may want to come back and redo it. You'll start catching short stretches where they're happily playing without you hovering.

3.5–4 years

Off and running
Your words

Flip it. Ask them to tell you the story. "Teach me how this works." "What happens next?" You become the audience now — they lead, you listen and stay curious.

Their hands

Detailed drawings, first letters, complex builds, scissors with real control. They can set up and problem-solve a lot of the activity themselves.

"Finished" looks like

A genuine 30 minutes of independent play — with you nearby, not hands-on. This is the quiet-time routine you've been building, finally paying you back.
